These candied sweet potatoes are tender, glazed in a buttery brown sugar sauce, and ready in 55 minutes on the stovetop. The perfect holiday side dish for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 inch rounds
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Peel all six sweet potatoes and cut them into one inch thick rounds. Consistent thickness ensures even cooking.
  2. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium low heat. Swirl the pan occasionally until the butter is fully melted.
  3. Add the sweet potato rounds to the skillet, spreading them out as much as possible. Pour in the granulated sugar and brown sugar. Sprinkle the cinnamon and nutmeg over everything.
  4. Gently stir to combine using a wide spatula, being careful not to break the potato slices. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  5. Cover the skillet with a lid and cook for 40 minutes. Stir gently every 10 to 15 minutes, keeping the heat at medium low to prevent burning.
  6. Test the potatoes with a fork. They should be completely tender with no resistance. If needed, cook for another 5 to 10 minutes.
  7. Remove the lid and add the salt and vanilla extract. Stir gently one final time to incorporate.
  8. Serve directly from the skillet or arrange in a casserole dish. Pour any remaining sauce over the top before serving.

Notes

Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Freeze for up to 3 months in a freezer safe container.

Reheating: Reheat in a covered baking dish at 350 degrees F for about 20 minutes. Stovetop reheating over low heat also works well.

Substitutions: Use vegan butter or coconut oil for dairy free. Reduce sugar by half for a less sweet version. Add maple syrup or bourbon for extra flavor.

Tips: Keep slices at one inch thick for best texture. Stir gently and infrequently to prevent breaking the potatoes.
