Honey Stung Pizza is a sweet and spicy hot honey pizza with homemade crust, melty cheese, and chili heat, finished with a warm honey drizzle.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water (not hot)
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 tablespoon honey (for the dough)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup pizza or tomato sauce
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup sliced spicy pepperoni, soppressata, or cooked crumbled sausage
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes, plus more to taste
  • 2 tablespoons runny honey (for drizzling after baking)
  • Fresh basil leaves, optional, for topping
  • Grated parmesan cheese, optional, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the warm water, instant yeast, and 1 tablespoon honey. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes, until it looks foamy on top and small bubbles begin to form.
  2. Add the flour, salt, and olive oil to the bowl. Stir with a wooden spoon until a rough dough comes together and most of the flour is mixed in.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes, folding and pressing the dough until it is smooth, stretchy, and just slightly tacky. Dust with a little extra flour only if it is too sticky to handle.
  4. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl, turning once to coat. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, until it has doubled in size.
  5. While the dough rises, slice your spicy meats, shred the mozzarella, and measure out the sauce, chili flakes, and 2 tablespoons of honey. Prepare any extra toppings you want, like thin sliced onions or peppers.
  6. About 20 minutes before you plan to bake, heat your oven to 475 F. If you have a pizza stone or an upside down baking sheet, place it in the oven to preheat.
  7. Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release extra air. Transfer it to a floured counter and roll or stretch it into a circle about 12 inches wide, keeping the edges slightly thicker for a crust.
  8. Place the stretched dough on a piece of parchment paper or a lightly oiled baking pan. Spread a thin layer of sauce over the surface, leaving a small border around the edge.
  9. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella evenly over the sauce, then add the spicy meats and any extra toppings. Finish with a light sprinkle of red chili flakes over the top.
  10. Slide the pizza on the parchment onto the hot stone, or place the pan in the oven. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbling in spots.
  11. Remove the pizza from the oven and let it rest for 1 to 2 minutes. Drizzle the 2 tablespoons of honey in thin lines over the hot pizza, then top with fresh basil and grated parmesan if using.
  12. Slice the Honey Stung Pizza into wedges and serve right away while the cheese is melty and the sweet and spicy flavors are at their best.

Notes

Storage: Let leftover Honey Stung Pizza slices cool to room temperature, then store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. For longer storage, freeze cooled slices in a single layer, then transfer to freezer-safe bags or containers and keep for up to 2 months. Reheat in a 375 F oven or air fryer until hot and crisp, and add a fresh drizzle of honey before serving.

Substitutions: Use store-bought pizza dough instead of homemade if you are short on time. Swap the spicy meats for cooked chicken or bacon, and try different cheeses like provolone or a little goat cheese along with mozzarella. For a milder pizza, reduce the chili flakes and use a light clover honey.

Make Ahead: Mix and rise the dough up to 24 hours ahead, then store it covered in the refrigerator. Let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before shaping. You can also par-bake the crust for 4 to 5 minutes, cool, then add toppings and finish baking later the same day.

Tips: Do not overload the pizza with sauce and toppings or the center can get soggy. Always drizzle the honey after baking so it does not burn and the crust stays crisp.
